Profile...John Gilleece

John has lived all of his life in Clydebank, and has lived in Dalmuir since 1970 when he moved with his family from Faifley. He is very well known in Dalmuir in particular and Clydebank in general partly as the result of being closely associated with DPHA for so many years, but more especially for being a very well respected Clydebank Councillor, serving as the elected member for Parkhall ward from 1986 to 1996. John has been involved with the Association since 1978, and has spent many of those years as the elected Secretary or Chairperson. He has been Chair since 2005.

“I have been on the Committee of the DPHA on and off for 28 years and in that time I have seen the massive improvements that we have made, not only in the renovation and new build that we have undertaken but in the development of the community as a whole.”

In 1986 John was elected to the Council and in my ten years on the Council held the positions of Chair of Planning and then Leader of the Council. In these years he feels he gained great experience in all aspects of local government that he was able to use when he came back onto the Association’s Management Committee.

Although to modest to admit it, he is still frequently asked by previous constituents and current politicians if he would consider returning to local government politics. His normal reply cannot be printed. It cannot be denied however that his contribution is well remembered, and that it is a great compliment to be asked.

“The participation in helping Dalmuir to regenerate itself has been a great motivation to me. And the enjoyment I get from working with the people on the committee and the staff has been a great joy. I know that the work is never finished; there are always new projects to be considered. But as long as we have the commitment of the members of the committee, and the expertise of our staff, we, in my opinion can achieve our goals for the future.”
